About Keytona
Keytona is a free typing race game you play right in your browser. The words you type drive your car: every correct letter pushes it down the track, so the faster you type, the faster you go. Make a mistake and your tyres squeal while you fix it. It's a real 3D typing racing game, with four cars on the starting grid, a crowd in the grandstands, red lights counting down to green and a chequered flag at the finish.
Every race is close. Your rivals, like Turbo Tia, Max Mach and Captain Clack, type at their own speed, and that speed is set around yours, so a beginner at 15 words per minute and a pro at 100 both get a real fight. Your best run comes along as a see-through ghost car, so you can see exactly where you're beating yourself. Type six words in a row without a mistake to fill your boost, then press Enter and your car blasts through the next word.
Keytona is also a great way to learn to type. The Career has eight cups that follow a touch typing course: the home row first (A S D F and J K L), then the top row, the bottom row, everyday words, capitals, numbers and punctuation, and finally passages from classic books such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows. After every race you see your words per minute, your accuracy, a speed chart, and the keys that slow you down.
Win coins to unlock 17 cars, from a Zippy Hatch and a City Cab to a Fire Engine and a Formula Racer, and 15 paints including gold and rainbow. Race on eight tracks: sunny meadows, a palm-lined beach, a desert canyon, a neon city at night, snowy mountains, an autumn valley, a sunset speedway and a starlit circuit. There's a daily race with the same text for everyone, and you can challenge a friend with a link or take turns on one keyboard. Keytona works on computers, tablets and phones, it's free, and there's nothing to download. If you're looking for typing games that feel like real games, start here.

Tips for Keytona
Accuracy beats speed
A mistake stops your car until you fix it. Typing a little slower without mistakes is faster than rushing and backspacing.
Save boosts for long words
A boost types the rest of the current word for you, so use it at the start of a long word for the biggest jump.
Read ahead
Look at the next word while you finish the one you're typing. You can read the text during the countdown too.
Learn the home row
Rest your fingers on A S D F and J K L. The bumps on F and J help you find them without looking. The Home Row Rally cup practises exactly this.
Race your ghost
Your best run in each race type comes back as a see-through car. Beat it and you've set a new best.
Frequently asked questions
Is Keytona free?
Yes. Keytona is a free typing race game that runs in your web browser. There's nothing to download, nothing to buy and no account to make.
What is a typing race game?
A typing race game turns typing into a race: each racer types the same text, and how far you've typed is how far your car has driven. In Keytona, every correct letter moves your car forward, so the fastest and most accurate typist crosses the finish line first.
How is my speed worked out?
Speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). Like other typing tests, Keytona counts every 5 characters, spaces included, as one word. Your WPM is the correct characters you typed divided by 5, per minute. Accuracy is the share of key presses that were right the first time.
Can I play Keytona on my phone or tablet?
Yes. Keytona works with the on-screen keyboard: hold your phone upright, and the text sits at the top with your car just below, above the keyboard. Tap Boost to use a boost. A tablet with a keyboard plays just like a computer.
Can Keytona help me learn to type?
Yes. The Career mode is a typing course: it starts with the home row keys and adds new keys a few at a time, then moves on to real words, capitals, numbers, punctuation and passages from classic books. After every race you see your accuracy and the keys that slow you down, so you know what to practise.
Is Keytona good for kids?
Yes. It's made for kids and grown-ups alike: there's no chat, no ads inside the game and no sign-up, and all the texts are friendly. The computer racers adjust to your speed, so younger typists win races too.
How do I race a friend?
Finish a race and press Challenge a friend on the results. You get a link to send; your friend races the very same text against your car. You can also choose Race a friend, then Two players, one keyboard, and take turns on the same computer.
What is a good typing speed?
Most people type around 35 to 45 words per minute. 60 WPM is fast, and 80 WPM or more is very fast. Racing a little every day is a great way to go faster, and the Career starts at whatever speed you have.
Where do the texts come from?
The sentences were written for Keytona, and the book passages come from classic stories that are now in the public domain, such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Black Beauty.
Does Keytona save my progress?
Yes. Your coins, cars, career stars and best times are saved automatically in the browser you play in. Clearing your browser data resets them.
