A zombie infection shooter for your browser

Hordefall is a free online zombie infection game: a first-person shooter you play right in your browser on a computer. Ten players spawn in Frostline Depot, a snowy freight yard at night, and everyone starts as a human. Then a countdown runs out, one player turns into a zombie, and the infection begins.

One hit from a zombie and you turn too. Humans win if anyone is still human when the round timer ends; the zombies win when the last human falls. Bullets don't just hurt the dead, they push them back, so a good team on a ladder, in a vent or behind a barricade can hold off a whole horde while the timer runs down.

Your cash buys the tools for the job: pistols, SMGs, pump and auto shotguns, rifles, a silenced marksman rifle, a bolt-action sniper and a minigun, plus napalm, frost and flare grenades, razor wire, crate barricades, laser tripmines and a sentry gun. Turn into a zombie and you pick a class with its own power: the fast Runner, the Brute that charges through barricades, the Leaper, the acid-spitting Spitter, the Shrieker, the near-invisible Stalker, the healing Mender and the classic Rotter.

Frostline Depot is built for holding out: container stacks you can only reach by ladder, a water tower, a pump bunker with one steel door, a crawl vent, a frozen canal, a culvert, train cars and a control tower, all under falling snow. Some rounds are special: a giant Titan against everyone, a lone hero with a minigun against the horde, a Swarm or a Plague. Matches are ten rounds, you level up as you play, and new guns and zombie classes unlock along the way.

Tips for surviving the night

  • Height wins

Zombies have to climb to reach you. A ladder they must come up one at a time is the best friend a human has: aim at the top and keep shooting.

  • Don't reload together

Knockback only works while someone is shooting. Take turns reloading so the doorway is never quiet.

  • Armour saves you once

A vest takes a zombie hit or two before you turn. Buy one before you buy a second grenade.

  • Traps on the way in

Put razor wire or a barricade where zombies arrive and a laser mine on the wall next to it. They slow down, you shoot.

  • As a zombie, wait for friends

One zombie on a ladder gets pushed off. Three from two directions get in. Use your power when they're reloading.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hordefall free?

Yes. Hordefall is a free zombie shooter that runs in your browser. There's nothing to download, nothing to buy and no account to make.

Is Hordefall multiplayer?

Yes. Press Play and you join a room of 10 straight away. If our game server can't be reached, the game still starts and you play a full match in your browser.

How does the infection work?

Everyone starts human. When the countdown ends, one player turns into a zombie (two in bigger rooms). A zombie's hit turns a human into a zombie unless armour takes it. Zombies come back after a few seconds when they die, so the humans hold out rather than clear the map. If any human is still standing when the timer ends, the humans win.

Can I play Hordefall on my phone or tablet?

No. Hordefall is a first-person shooter made for a mouse and keyboard, so it plays on laptops and desktop computers.

What are the zombie classes?

Rotter (all-rounder, rage), Runner (fast, sprint), Brute (huge, charges through barricades), Leaper (pounces over heads), Spitter (acid that slows and blurs), Shrieker (a scream that staggers humans and kills their flashlights), Stalker (nearly invisible when still) and Mender (heals the horde). Some unlock as you level up. Press M to choose.

Hordefall runs slowly or won't start. What can I do?

Hordefall is a 3D game that needs WebGL 2 and a graphics card. Use an up-to-date Chrome or Edge with hardware acceleration on. The first load downloads about 50 MB, so give it a moment. If it stutters, press Esc and set Graphics to Medium or Low.

Is there blood?

There's some blood when you shoot zombies, but no gore. You can turn blood off in Settings.

Is Hordefall OK for kids?

It's a zombie shooter with guns, dark scenes and jump scares, so it suits teens and adults better than young children. There's text chat in rooms.

Does Hordefall save my progress?

Yes. Your level, unlocks, daily challenges, nickname and settings are saved in the browser you play in. Clearing your browser data resets them.
